Chinese Community Earth Day Initiative

A Nationwide Call for the Community to Act

April 22 is the Earth Day of 2009. This is a special year. A year of worldwide economic recession, a year of energy and environmental crisis, and a year when many Americans are asking what they can do for the country. In short, a year of change.

For our part, the Chinese-American community of nearly 4 millions, we are asking what we can do for our environment and for our country; we are asking what we can do to make Chinese community an active and contributing member of this diverse American family. And we believe the fast-approaching Earth Day 2009 will present us a great opportunity to do just that. We call it “Chinese Community Earth Day Initiative”.

Here is our Earth Day proposal for our community: on April 22, Chinese communities across the country will together do a simple but meaningful thing: we will encourage and organize our fellow Chinese to go to locally designated venues (mall, chain store, subway station, or Chinatown, etc) to purchase energy saving bulb. Every household need such bulbs. Every household can afford them. And of course, every bulb purchased helps save money while it helps save the planet Earth. If you happen to use the energy saving bulb already, you might as well buy a few more to give them away as gift to your friends, neighbors, colleagues, or even a stranger, on Earth Day.

This is the very least we can do, and let us do it together as a caring community. Where ever you come from, whatever belief you hold, on this day, when you and participate, you are a contributing member of Chinese-American family, and you will be a proud custodian of this fragile planet Earth. It also serves as a great way to connect with other communities, to change and improve our image, and to educate our next generation by setting a fine example for them.

We call on other communities and Americans to do the same for this Earth Day; and we will be doing it together with our brethrens and sisters on the other side of the Pacific, on this day and hereafter.
