On Monday, May 12, a major earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, jolted southwestern China's Sichuan Province. It has claimed over 68,000 lives so far and many more are still missing and unaccounted for. The survivors’ houses and lives were destroyed in the earthquake. There are more than 50,000 homeless in Gansu province alone; many of them are the helpless, the smallest victims. As the death toll continues to soar inexorably, there are stories of hope and survival amid the misery and destruction.
According to United Kingdom Daily Mail report, rescuers discovered a five-year-old boy, Da Xing, after removing a huge slab of concrete which was balanced precariously over his head. He lay curled up in a cavity beneath and had survived for six days without food and water. In Hanwang, doctors amputated a teenage girl's, Yang Liu’s, crushed legs. This was the only way they could pull her alive from the wreckage of her school. Twelve-year-old Huang Siyu, from YingXiu, has a pink plastic flower in her hair, a pained look on her face, and two broken legs. She was rescued after two days under the rubble of her school. What is uncertain is whether she still has her parents. All three of these children lost their homes, and it was a miracle these kids have survived!
